Chapter 5

Preparing for the search at the LHC

There are several aspects to the preparation work carried out for the Higgs search at the LHC. First and foremost, of course, the design and construction of the accelerator and detector facilities, with concurrent tests of each subsystem, some of which used test beams designed to provide realistic LHC conditions to electronics and detector prototypes (see for example CERN Courier 2000).

In addition to the construction of experimental facilities, and the design and preparation of the computing infrastructure that would support the massive amounts of data to be produced, other crucial preparation work may be broadly grouped as follows:

Standard model predictions. From the theory side, it was necessary to have reliable calculations of several quantities for the expected physics conditions (proton–proton collisions at the LHC center-of-mass energy); some of these quantities are: a. the expected rate of production of the Higgs boson,

b. the probability of each allowed decay channel (i.e. the combinations of stable particles into which it could disintegrate) and

c. the expected rate of standard model processes which could mimic these decay channels (i.e. the background rates).
